• José Antonio Muñoz, partner of the legal firm Arias & Muñoz was reelected as President of AmCham
San José, February 2, 2012. The Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) held its Annual Meeting on Monday, January 30th where it elected its Board of Directors for the 2012-2013 period. José Antonio Muñoz, partner of the legal firm Arias & Muñoz was reelected as President of AmCham.

As part of the Annual Assembly, AmCham´s President presented his annual report where he highlighted the work the Chamber did in 2011 regarding contraband, intellectual property, and fiscal reform.

2011 PRESIDENT’S REPORT
José Antonio Muñoz
I would like to highlight some of the events that have had an impact on the business community during my year as President of AmCham.
Costa Rica´s loss of five points in the Global Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum, reflected the need for improvements in security and infrastructure, it also highlighted issues like the fiscal deficit and excessive bureaucracy in the country.
This confirmed the need for an organization like the Competitiveness Promotion Council (CPC) that we launched in November, to help drive the changes needed for Costa Rica to maintain its competitiveness.

The Central Bank of Costa Rica presented its Macroeconomic Program for the 2012-13 period, with the purpose of informing the population of the behavior of the main macroeconomic variables during 2011, as well as to communicate its interpretation of the foreseeable economic conditions, the challenges that will be faced, and the objectives and orientation of its economic policy.

AACCLA´s Annual Strategic Planning Retreat
On January 25-27, AmCham participated in AACCLA´s Annual Strategic Planning Retreat. The result of this meeting was a draft agenda for the year ahead.
Part 1: The Policy Agenda
Objective 1) Actively promote the expansion of free trade with and within thehemisphere through advocacy, educational, and public relations activities.
• Promote trade liberalization in the hemisphere through harmonization of trade agreements, bilateral tax and investment treaties, and trade preference programs.
• Ensure rapid implementation of the U.S.-Colombia and the U.S.-Panama trade agreements.

CAFTA-DR Public-Private Sector Dialogue on Trade Facilitation
AmCham participated in the CAFTA-DR Public-Private Sector Dialogue on Trade Facilitation in Miami, Florida on January 24th. For more information on this event you can see the joint statement from the CAFTA-DR governments following the Trade Facilitation meeting that was held prior to AACCLA´s Strategic Planning Retreat.

GLOBAL BUSINESS CONFERENCE
On February 21-22 AmCham Executive Director will be attending the Global Business Conference organized by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
"As a piece of this broader agenda, Secretary Clinton has invited senior officials from U.S. business support organizations in over 175 countries for a two-day conference hosted by the State Department in Washington, DC (February 21- 22). The conference will highlight how the U.S. government can help promote U.S. businesses abroad, increase U.S. exports, attract new investment to the United States, and create American jobs. Secretary Clinton will be joined by high-level representatives from the White House, Department of Commerce, the Export- Import Bank, OPIC, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, and U.S. business executives to participate in the conference."
